Injured Ideye, Anichebe Out Of Anfield Trip

Nigerian forwards Brown Ideye and Victor Anichebe have both been excluded from West Bromwich Albion’s match day squad for Saturday’s Barclays English Premier League game against Liverpool.

Both forwards are currently injured and they will both sit out the trip to Anfield, West Bromwich Albion manager Alan Irvine confirmed during his pre-match press conference held moments ago.

Supersport reports that Ideye, West Brom’s record signing, has not played since rolling his ankle while scoring his only goal for the club in the 3-2 League Cup win against Hull City at the Hawthorns on 24 September.

Victor Anichebe

The Super Eagles striker was tipped to make his return from injury in the game against Liverpool but Irvine has now moved to quash any such lingering hopes of the former Dynamo Kyiv man making a swift return.

“Brown has an ankle problem. He’s just not quite ready yet. He’s not at the stage where he’s running at a certain level and we can’t get him to top speed. So he’s not been able to join us in training.

“We just feel it will be too difficult to make it for this weekend but we certainly feel he’ll be ready for the Manchester United game (on October 20),” Irvine said.

The WBA trainer also revealed that Anichebe had already commenced full training but noted that he decided to exclude the big forward from the Liverpool party as a precautionary measure.

Brown Ideye

“Victor was training but I said then we would see what kind of reaction to that problem he has, and unfortunately he had a bit of a reaction but this game will come a bit too soon.

“I anticipate we will get a lot of work done with him during this international break and he will also be available for selection for the Manchester United game.

“Unfortunately Silvestre (Varela) has a groin problem which we are assessing at the moment. We’re talking with Porto about that and it’s difficult for me to say where he is at the moment, but he’s further away than Victor or Brown,” he said.

This is a big blow to the Nigerian national team as the Super Eagles are expected to play back to back crucial 2015 qualifiers against Sudan on 10 and 15 of October, 2014.

Nigeria are currently placed third in their group that include Congo, South Africa and Sudan. Both Congo and South Africa are placed first and second in the group respectively.

The Super Eagles could only garnered one point out of possibly six points in their first two matches against Congo and South Africa.

A situation that makes the two matches against Sudan very crucial.

Lagos Government Declares Free Ride For Residents

In celebration of the 2014 Eid-el-Kabir, the Lagos State Government has announced that residents in the state commuting on government owned buses will enjoy a free ride today, 4 October.

This gesture was announced by Dayo Mobereola, the Managing Director, Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA),  in a statement issued by the company’s External Relations Officer, Kolawole Ojelabi.

“In order to ease the movement of commuters during the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, the Lagos State Government is offering Lagos residents free bus ride on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014,” Mobereola said.

He urged the public to keep faith with the government in all its transport projects, aimed at making life and movement easier for residents.

“Commuters along the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) route will enjoy free ride from Mile 12 to CMS, while those on the Bus Franchise Scheme (BFS) will ride free on Ikotun-Igando-Iyana-Ipaja-Ikeja.”

Muslims praying.

He called on Nigerians to reflect on the significance of the celebration, which is sacrificial giving and urged that it should not be reduced to mere eating and drinking alone.

The managing director also called on all to use the holiday to reflect on the current security challenges being faced in the country and prayed for its quick end.

Meanwhile, the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has advised Nigerians to, in the spirit of the festival, resist all vices that seek to weaken and tear the country apart.

The party, in a statement issued yesterday by its National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, also charged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the virtue of faith and total submission to the will of the Almighty God as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim, who was willing to sacrifice his only son, Ishmael in obedience to God’s command.

Metuh averred that Eid El-Kabir granted Nigerians a great opportunity to rededicate themselves to God by rekindling the spirit of sacrifice, patience and love.

Eid El-Kabir, meaning “Festival of the sacrifice”), also called the Feast of the Sacrifice is the second of two religious holidays celebrated by Muslims worldwide each year.

It honors the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his promised son. Ishmael (Ismail)as an act of submission to God’s command, before God then intervened to provide Abraham with a lamb to sacrifice instead.

In the lunar-based Islamic calendar, Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah and lasts for four days. In the international Gregorian calendar, the dates vary from year to year, drifting approximately 11 days earlier each year.

Protest In Akure Over Mimiko’s Defection To PDP

Barely 24 hours after Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State dumped the Labour Party, LP, for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, reports say some members of the PDP in the state gathered at the party’s secretariat on Oyemekun Road in Akure to protest the defection of the governor.

According to Sahara Reporters, the protesters, who came from 18 local government areas of the state, chanted songs and castigated the PDP’s state executive officials for welcoming the governor back to the party.

Before joining the LP, Mimiko abandoned the PDP in 2006 after accusing the party of lacking “internal democracy”.

It was gathered that some of the aggrieved protesters described the Mimiko’s return to the PDP as an “infection,” comparing it to the “Ebola virus disease.”

Aggrieved PDP members being addressed by party leaders in Akure.

According to the protesters, the governor’s defection to the PDP would further deepen the crisis that was already besetting the party in the state since the governor’s plan to defect became public.

The PDP protesters stated that they would not allow Mimiko to hijack the leadership of their party.

Some of the protesters said they were angered that the leadership of the party in Abuja had not consulted them before welcoming Mimiko.

The protesters opined that they were aggrieved that their party immediately welcomed Governor Mimiko without probing his past.

Governor Olusegun Mimiko

“I can’t imagine that these leaders of our party would allow Mimiko into our fold again. He is just an Ebola Virus that would further destroy us. If [former Governor Olusegun] Agagu were alive, would [Mimiko} have decamped today?” an angry member asked.

Another protester said, “We don’t want him because I don’t know why someone who called himself a governor would go to Abuja and declare his defection. It is uncommon and we must resist it.”

Commenting on the protest, the deputy chairman of PDP in Ondo State, Fatai Adams, said the party was not ready to collapse the structures to accommodate Governor Mimiko.

Adams said that although the party officially received the governor into its fold in Abuja, it would not agree for him to hijack the structure.

He said: “The [members of the] State Working Committee have met in Abuja and resolved that there is need for us to protect the structure of the party at the state, local government and the ward levels.

We have filed a motion of injunction at the Federal Capital Territory High Court to protect the structure of the party because we are not ready to dismantle the structure of the party at this very crucial moment.

“Our primaries are less than a month and a lot of aspirants have shown intention to contest for various positions under this umbrella. We are fully prepared to protect the interests of all members who have worked assiduously and committed a lot of resources.”

The state deputy chairman continued: “We are not ready to surrender the structure of our great party to anybody. We were elected.”

It would be recalled that Governor Mimiko formally decamped to the PDP at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Thursday, 2 October, 2014 at an event presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

It was reported that Mimiko led two members of the National Assembly from Ondo state, all the 26 members of the state House of Assembly, all members of the State Executive Council and his supporters to the PDP.

Download Video:Boko Haram Killed Nigerian Pilot In New Video

The new video produced by Boko Haram shows beheading of a pilot from a missing Nigerian Air Force (NAF) jet.

Abubakar Shekau, who was said to have be killed several weeks ago, was also on the video.

Another part of Boko Haram video shows beheading of an alleged pilot

He said:“Here I am, alive and I will remain alive until the day Allah takes away my breath,” the man says in the Hausa language.

“Even if you kill me … it will not stop us imposing Islamic rule … We are still in our Islamic state, reigning and teaching the Koran.”

There seems to be the same man who claimed to be Shekau. He says that the Shariah law is the true law of their area. Then the caption shows some examples of punishments: amputation of hand of the young thief, stoning of a man accused in adultery.

The video ends with an image of a burnt plane. In the video Shekau claims to have brought down 10 military aircrafts.

Alleged Nigerian pilot minutes before execution

The video also shows a man standing on his knees in a camouflage. The fighter is standing over him with an axe. Later the captured officer is beheaded.

Closer look at the executed Boko Haram hostage

The victim introduced himself a wing commander og the Nigerian Air Force. He says he was undertaking a mission in Kauri area, Northeastern part of Borno State on September 11, 2014.

“We were shot down and our aircraft crashed,” he says. “To this day I don’t know the whereabouts of my second pilot.”

The United States still give a $7 million prize on Shekau’s head, despite the death claims.

Commotion Over Late MKO Abiola’s Property

An attempt by some people to sell a property that belongs to the late Bashorun MKO Abiola is causing commotion in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, Sunnewsonline reports.

It was gathered that the property in question, which houses an Islamic school and a mosque and located on a parcel of land along Abiola Way, is used for Sunday worship and other activities.

It was reported that the Governing Council of Zulikha Abiola Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies, Abeokuta raised alarm over the development.

Mutiu Agboke, a solicitor to the governing council informed that an influential family close to the Abiola family in Abeokuta was allegedly attempting to sell the property.

The late MKO Abiola, winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential elections in Nigeria.

According to a press statement released by Agboke, those attempting to sell the property were allegedly working with some unnamed members of the Abiola family.

The legal practitioner explained that the Islamic and Arabic School had been on the land since 1978 and was dedicated, through a will, to be an Islamic centre after the death of Abiola and entrusted to the governing council of the institution.

Agboke said the first son of the late politician, Kola Abiola, was made the proprietor of the Islamic centre, stressing that Abiola’s family had, at no time, sold, leased or licensed the property to any individual or group to take over the property for the purpose of sale or lease.

He stated that when he was informed about an attempt by some people to sell the property, a Caveat Emptor was written on the walls of the property only to be wiped by some ‘faceless people’.

“The attention of our client has been drawn to the activities of some unscrupulous elements parading themselves as the bonafide owner of the expanse of land upon which both Zulikha Abiola College of Arabic and Islamic Studies and Zulikha Abiola Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies were built.

“The individuals have been making frantic effort to sell the said parcel of land, with the block of classrooms, mosque and other
structures thereon belonging to our client. We reiterate strongly, on behalf of our client that the named property belonged to the late Chief MKO Abiola and had been duly entrusted with the council of the college.

“We write on behalf of our client that the Abiola family had at no time sold, leased, licensed the property to any individual, group or delegated any individual or group to sell or lease the property on its behalf,” statement read in part.

Agboke advised anyone attempting to buy the property to desist “for doing so will amount to buying nothing.”

The late MKO Abiola, before his death in 1998, was a popular Nigerian Yoruba businessman, publisher, politician and aristocrat of the Yoruba Egba clan.

He ran for the presidency in 1993, and is widely regarded as the presumed winner of the inconclusive election since no official final results were announced.

He died in 1998, after being denied victory when the entire election results were dubiously annulled by the preceding military president Ibrahim Babangida because of alleged evidence that they were corrupt and unfair.
